Farmall H Original Restoration

Attention Farmall guys!

My Dad is close to finishing the restoration on a 53 Farmall H and we are needing some help determining how the tractor is supposed to look as original as far as the wiring related to the ignition, Headlights, etc. as well as the starter solenoid location and everything attached to the steering column post. I know someone out there has photos of their original H restoration if you would be so kind to post some photos of how everything is suppose to look all the way around the tractor it would surely be appreciated as we are not Farmall guys as we have only fooled with GREEN and are new to the Farmall restos as we were kinda suckered into this resto LOL.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

There are many pictures to the left. An Author, Guy Fey, Has a Farmall book on authenticity (usually in book stores) Jim

JDApuller, first off, welcome. Second piece of advice, be careful......you could turn red permanently! I need a few of you "green" guys left or I won't have anybody to harass!! LOL, good natured fun.

Jim provides good advice. There are lots of pictures of redone H's, but few true restorations. You have to decide what you are looking to do. If you want it to look nice and work, and not so much worried about the originality, then lots and lots of pictures. IF you are going for originality, don't look for the "restored" ones, look for the old, rusty ones in their work clothes. I have had more luck looking at the old ones, and making my own conclusions than I have looking at someone's interpretation of "original".

both approaches work, but you need to determine what your end goal is.

Thanks Tom and dont worry I can assure you I will never turn red I am ashamed to tell anyone that we are restoring a red tractor LOL trust me you cut me open and I bleed Green!
I wish we had more to go off of but the tractor was still running and driving when we got it but it was slightly "ragged" out and everything on the column was certainly not original but the customer wants this tractor to be put back original so we were just looking to get some pictures of some restored H"s to see how they were put back.

Thanks

JDApuller, here is my email addy flemingt AT consolidated DOT net.

Send me an email with your phone number if you want. I'll be happy to help if I can. While I am NOT the final word, I do have some good insight and experience that may help. Reach out if you want.

Why not purchase an entire new repro wiring harness. That will save you time and money in the long run and it will have the period correct woven shielding.

Gordo makes an excellent point. Rhode island wiring does outstanding work, and I know first hand. Only draw back is, they charge for it. I spend the extra money and bought a complete wiring harness when restoring my 1949 IHC KBS-5 truck. I winced at the price, but the quality and fit were excellent. again, a decision you have to make (or your customer does).

Gordo,

thanks but we have already purchased the harness from Brillman Company we have used these harnesses on the last couple of restos we have completed and they are certainly the way to go!
Our biggest thing is putting everything back the way it should be on the column post as the tractor was all in pieces when it came to us and I am having a hard time finding detailed photos online to show how everything should go.

Thanks

The others on this site have tons of experience and will no doubt give you some great guidance.

That said, I would think the definitive source would be an original operator's manual. I don't own an H or an H manual, but I'd bet there would be clear illustrations of most of the stuff you're looking for. And it's straight from the IH horse's mouth. If the operator's manual doesn't help, there's always the parts manual. Maybe someone else on the site has this info and would be willing to send you copies of a couple of pages.
