I have been working on a H that sat for a long time. I was not stuck but when I got it started tonight it ran really nice but smoked really heavy. Im guessing the rings are stuck from sitting. Is there anything I can do or try to get them free'd up before I tare the motor apart? Thanks for any help. Paul

Have you tried putting some Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders and letting it soak in for a couple of days? I would not tear the engine down until I had used MM or some other penetrating oil in those cylinders to loosen the rings.

I would try dumping about a cup of ATF in each spark plug hole and letting it sit for a few days, then crank it over to blow out what is left, put plugs in, and then work it hard for a few hours.

I had a H that had same issue ran smooth good power but smoked Offaly I had a old timer tell me get engine warm and remove intake pipe doff the carb and set about half throttle and have some Bon ami powdered soup and let the engine suck it in a little at a time
I never tried it but I did notice the more I worked it the better it got but didn't take much sitting to act up again
I think sitting around is hard on anything they need to be run and warmed up good

I thought the Bon Ami thing only worked on a fresh rebuild with trouble getting the rings to seat , not on worn engine.

I have a BN that sat a long time, it also smoked like crazy when I first got it running. I put some Sea Foam in the cylinders and a couple of days later I started it up and after about 15 minutes it stopped smoking and still does not smoke anymore. Might have just got lucky but it worked for me. Good Luck!

Putting a table spoon of ATF in the cylinders can free up the rings, if it has not run doing work, do that before any other action. Just getting the residual oil out of the system can just take some hours of operation at mid to near full power. I would not put an abrasive into any engine ever. If it isn"t seating the rings it was not correctly rebuilt and deglazed. Jim

I agree with you on the abrasives, you are more likely to do damage than help, but I have heard of it being done successfully. I would think a little bit goes a long way, best left to the very experienced.

Hook something to it and work it, really WORK it, for a couple of hours before you condemn it.

That's usually all an old engine like that needs to free up stuck rings.

I've also had good luck spraying 1/2 a can of straight Seafoam into the intake, as fast as it will take without killing the engine.

I had EXACTLY that situation with my H. A week of MMO in the cylinder, fresh oil and filter, and it has not attempted to burn any oil. No smoke, and no drop in crankcase oil after 5 hours of use.

It was smoking horribly before - looked like a mosquito fogger.

YES, that Bon-Ami thing is only for NEW rebuilds. ABSOLUTELY do not use it in an older engine.

Yep, Heat up some marvel myst, oil, & put down cyls. Littlie in base and fire it. Put it to work and should re-seat rings.

Keep working it and the rings shud seat and smoking shud stop. I had this happen on my late 8N and the smoke cleared up.
