450 hand throttle

The hand throttle on the 450 I am restoring does not stay where I set it. I have tightned up the friction screw without much effect. I assume that the notches on the throttle are not there for looks so I am wondering if the handle is supposed to lock into them. Also, there is a spring on the rod at the handle that operates the linkage to the govenor. The handle is on the rod to the rear from the spring, not in front of it. Is that positioned the way it should be?

Nope, the cotter pin, a washer, the spring, then the lever then the pivot hole, from away from you to toward you. The spring is to push the handle into the notches. Revolve the washer that fits the notches to get a square edge to it. Also you can use a small triangular file to re "square" the notches. Jim

Replace the washer that goes into the notches with a larger diameter (fender washer) make sure you get the thicker one that will just fit the notches.

Notice the small pin at the rear of throttle shaft keeping the shaft from moving forward and losing handle spring pressure. Some have a clip and both can be missing or worn off. other parts should look about like the picture. Unless you have the parts accessory handle that looks different without the washer.

Sounds like you could have one on these. If so I think you need to find regular hardware items or fabricate to repair.
Should add get a hardware spring to work if needed and make a friction disc. Not the original adjusting bolt on this one.

Dave, does that device attached to the throttle lever in your top picture actually work to hold the lever in position? I have a NOS one with a small IH decal on it that I picked up years ago and was told at the time it was to hold a 450 etc throttle in position. I've showed it to several people and nobody has seen one before. Can you provide me with some insight on that little fellow?? (I haven't acquired a 450 yet to try it on)

I knew IH sold them under part number 999627R91.
One in the other picture is the only one ever found by me. Only the second one seen.
Never tried it on a tractor, advertisement says holds it's position in the roughest going. Also claims gas is saved, that maybe a stretch.
Thinking some company other than IH probably made them.
To install the bolt and washer are removed from the handle and the unit is installed with a pin. Notches no longer used.

Thanks for the replies. The hand throttle I have looks like the one in your picture and the one in the advertisement brochure. If the notches are not used on my throttle, I will try to get the friction pad to work better. Thanks again.
