My cub will only run with the choke on, if you open the choke it will die. I've only had this tractor a couple of months and i thought everything was good but come to find out the choke lever doesn't move the choke. I've been running it with the choke on and didn't know it. There is a manual choke on the outside of the carb. and when i open the choke the tractor will die. I have adjusted the one screw on the carb and it doesn't really change anything.

if you are somewhat mechanical, there is a small brass bolt on or near the bottom of teh carb. undo that and let the gas run for a moment or 2. sometimes water, trash get in the gas and could cause this. also, there is a cut off somewhere on teh gas line or on the settling bowl. open and close and open again and maybe one of these will help.

closed choke rasies the gas to air ratio.

Opening the choke reverses that.

Very likely it's not getting enough gas to begin with - so you have to rely on forcing a higher ratio with the choke just to run.

Best bet is usually to pull the carb apart and give it a thorough cleaning. Before doing that - be sure you get good gas flow to the carb. Pull the gas line - open the valve and watch the flow.

Should be a steady flow. But it's not uncommon to get blockage in the line from sediment in the tank.

If poor flow - start by cleaning out the sight glass screen.

If the flow is fine, I'd clean the carb.

Start with the easy fix.

There is a brass hex head on the outer side of the carb, near the bottom. It is the main jet. Unscrew it and clean the small hole in the end. Use a fine piece of SOFT wire. A phone wire will work. Then blow it out with air. Reinstall and see if that fixes it.

agree with the other guys, carb is plugged. as far as fixing the choke, there is a bracket on the choke shaft that the rod hooks to. its probably cracked and slipping. my cub did that. steiners has the bracket that you need, about 28 dollars part number ihs240

Very good tips. I had the small screen clogged on my 68 lo cub. It would die under power. It is right in the carb, where the gas line comes in. It was full of junk. I cleaned it, and it ran fine.
