I get fire through the coil into the distributor cap but no fire to the plugs. Farmall Super A. how do I diagnose what the problem is

Replace the cap & rotor. Or is the rotor laying on the frame rail like I did one time?
Possible that the cap needs cleaning on the inside.

Carbon tracking on inside of cap or on the rotor, cracks in the cap, moisture in the cap (WD40 is designed for this) Jim

I tried a new cap and got the same results. I get a weak spark sometimes when I break the points with a screwdriver with the switch on. could it be the condenser?

The tractor has set up for 2 years. It was running good when I set it up but I get no fire to the plugs now. when I tie a plug to the coil I get fire but not through the cap. I tried a new cap and got the same results.

If you hook a plug wire and a plug direct to the coil and get a good spark but NOT out a cap terminal with it and the rotor in place, sounds like a cap and/or cap and rotor problem.

It can fire with no condenser at all (or a weak but not shorted one) but the spark will be weaker. If the condenser or its wiring was a dead short theres no spark at all.

Heres my Ignition Troubleshooting Procedure, it may or may not help.

You're welcome, my procedure will help find the cause of no spark at all, however, its not much help if you have a good hot spark out of the coil but NOT via the rotor tip and cap??? If the spark is very very weak out the coil top, perhaps having to then jump from the rotor tip to a cap terminal is an added problem??? You need a good visible blue NOT a faint thin wimpy yellow spark you know... I have seen bad rotor tips that have a high voltage breakdown to ground problem and a cap may have a crack or carbon traces, have you tried a new rotor tip???

Coil wire (needs to be solid wire or Magnetic suppression, not carbon powder) needs to be checked for continuity if you used a sparkplug wire to check coil output.
The rotor is also a suspect! Jim

if the rotor button is in place, clean the rotor button tip, inside contacts of ignition coil cap, top side of rotor button spring and bend the rotor button spring upwards, so that you are sure that it is contacting inside coil terminal. check ignition coil wire for continuity.

Make sure you have the points set at .020" and rub the points with a point file or 320 wet or dry. Check the condenser wire to make sure it's
not touching a ground. Hal

It ran when you shut it off. Now no spark to the plugs clean the points good and it will run again. Just finished one that had set 5yrs no fire cleaned the points started and ran just fine they can get a film and wont fire that makes two this spring same same no fire cleaned points and they both started and ran.

Just had to change the points on the 200. One had a little bump on it. Cleaned them a time or 2, it would run good for the next few times but then sputtering under load and hard to start. New points set to .020 and she fires right off pretty good now. Ran the disc over the garden and drew a few loads of manure and all seemed good. Am seriously thinking of going with a Pertronix and giving them up. Still having few carb issues, but it is a Carter UT so when funds allow may just get a Zeinith and be done with it
