Super C steering too tight

A friend pulled my Super C apart this winter and replaced the clutch ... All is well except the steering is much tighter now. It actually holds a turn by itself on level ground (instead of straightening out which is what I am used to). I can't see what he did to tighten it, I can't see any tightening mechanism at all. I greased the three or four fittings I could see. It didn't help, any ideas how to loosen the tension on the steering a bit?

Binding is probably the in the front bolster. Oil is probably gone or solidified from years of no maintenance.

Did by any chance he removed the pedestal and then replaced it with the tilt to the front as its supposed to be tilted to the back

They don't just go from loose to tight overnight due to lack of maintenance. They get harder and harder to steer gradually until they don't steer at all.

Did you ask your friend what he did to tighten the steering?

He had no reason to touch the steering box if all he did was replace the clutch. If he did anything, it would have been done to the shafts and universal joints.

The Super C steering is dead simple. You should be able to figure out where its binding by looking at it carefully. Take the steering shaft apart at the universal joint and try turning each section separately.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I will check out all three areas you mentioned. Much appreciated! --Aaron in NH

Good question, Gene. I think he just rolled both halves apart, supported on wooden posts, but I'll check with him this weekend.

Update: problem solved ... There is a little two-bolt bracket that pins the steering shafts to the body of the tractor just about in the middle between the front wheels and the steering wheel. And the bracket had been installed upside down. All better now. Thanks.
