Looking for a heavier seat spring under my 450 that i'm restoring, thought I herd once there was 3 wt.sizes but uable to find any info.any help would be appreciated.thanks,Pete.

Just did an M and a SM this winter. Both had the mid-mount shock, and both got the same shock new. The SM got an A&I spring that was painted black, the M got a Ste--iner spring that was painted red. The A&I one squashes down to nothing, and the Ste--iner one rides quite well.

I'm 295 lbs. none of the seat springs are stiff enough for me. I use one standard spring and cut about 1/3 off the top of another and put it inside the 1st spring. Works perfect.

I've seen a football placed inside the spring and air adjusted accordingly. I haven't tried that yet.

Also seen another loop of spring welded onto existing spring.

I could never find a new replacement seat spring with any kind of rating.

I saw this Farmall C that a big person put a Shock with spring that he said he got from a snowmobile salvage yard. It came off the front ski of a snowmobile and replaced the original with it.

IH listed 3 weights of springs identified by lightest 3 small notches on big end, then 4 medium, then 5 for heaviest, that's all they now make was the 5 the last I knew. This spring fit C/200, H/SuH/300/350, M/SuM/SMTA/400/450/460/560 was the models I know.

I think you might have that backwards. The black spring from A&I is the heavy duty type. I weigh 250, and the black one is what works for me. The red painted spring is for folks who are light-weights.

I don't think so. Local dealer ordered me shocks and a spring from A&I. Spring was black. I thought I had at least one extra new spring, so I only ordered one. Couldn't find any new ones at home, so when I needed some goodies from STP, I had the dealer get me a spring from them. Spring was red. There's nothing heavy-duty about my black spring--it squashes down as bad or worse than the old one I took off. The red one doesn't.

I'm guessing I weigh 250-260. I'm happy with the STP spring. I'm also guessing that 175# would squash that black spring as much or more as 250# does the red one. I'm pretty sure the A&I book only showed one spring. Could it be another one of those parts where me, myself, and I get the lone dud when the masses are happy with their parts?

I haven't heard any of the weight-loss gurus say adding a Super to your M puts 50 lbs. on the driver, so I guess I'm ok there.

I use the black springs myself, and I've sold a bunch of them. Everybody was happy with them, except one guy who admittedly weighed only about 160 pounds. I exchanged that black spring for a red one, and then he was happy.

IH part numbers are/were:

Heavy spring--5 notches.....354670R2.....for approx. 220# operator
Medium spring--4 notches...352598R2.....for approx. 180# operator
Light spring--3 notches.......354671R2.....for approx. 140# operator

I think IH or CIH subbed all to the heavy one years ago.

I've had good luck with the weaving together of two old springs.
Or adding a coil spring to seats with shocks.
Buying one of those cheapo load leveling kits for car rear shocks will get you enough parts for a couple tractors.
Just cut the kit spring down to whatever you need.

I restored my 450 2 years ago. I replaced every thing in suspension of the seat. I got my spring from Bates Corporation Bourbon, In.. I weigh 230 lbs. and the spring is a little stiff for me. Seat only drops about 1 1/2 inches when I set on seat. When I got tractor it had one of those spring over shocks and was one the most miserable riding thing with it.

I have a red spring from Bates Corporation ( they only sell red spring)and it is plenty stiff and I weigh 230 lbs. When I set in seat it only drops about 1 1/2 inches.
