H Carburetor.

The Yesterday"s Tractor Co. parts list shows two possible kits for an H carb, one kit for a Zenith and another for the OEM type. How can I tell by looking at the carb which kit to order? Do the numbers in the casting tell?

As I've just gone through this, and researched the crap out of it, I believe there were only 2 carbs for the H & HV. A 45108DB for the Kerosene model, and the 50981DA for the regular gas model, both made by IH (also variations [DB, DC..]). No Zenith on the H or M.

Check out this reference link:

Not sure what you have to do to your carb, but if it leaks constantly like mine, check the float as it may either need adjusting or have a hole in it. If it doesnt leak, I would take it apart and clean it real good first before buying a kit. just my 2¢

have fun.

I've rebuilt a BUNCH of H carburetors. You are correct with those 2 different models. The 2 models are basically the same. Only difference I could ever see was that MAYBE the main metering stem for the distillate/kerosene model MIGHT have had larger holes in it.

Since distillate is no longer available, and kerosene is really not an option either, it only makes sense to use the kit for the 50981 gasoline carburetor. That kit will work just fine for the 45108 carburetor, and then it will be all set and ready to go for gasoline.

Thanks for the confirmation rustyfarmall. I was always curious as to the difference between the Kerosene and Gas carbs...

thanks,

The most noticeable difference is the Kerosene / Distillate carburetors used a brass petcock instead of 1/8" plug in the drain hole.

There are some gas stations around here that sell kerosene. I can't think of one jusifiable reason to run it as opposed to gas with the possible exception being to avoid the ethanol.
