when i was 17 i used to work for a guy who milked 150 cows. he bought this 1066 new in 1971. i spent many days on this tractor, moving fitting and plowing. at one point the coolant froze and cracked the block. he had a 466 completely rebuilt and installed. it was an animal and i always wanted to buy it. i have never ran a tractor that ran like that so far. it was the envy of the guys around there, it would pull the same chisel plow we pulled with the magnum. now i am 27, and milking my own cows. i purchased the 1066 today off the same guy, and im still kinda shocked its mine. the only plans i have for the moment are to put a big chrome pipe on it and use it for fieldwork. when i said i never thought i would own it, he said he never thought he would sell it. figured it was kind of a neat story and i would share.

ran a 1466 open air with a straight pipe - then we put a muffler back on it LOUD :) great story by the way IH 66 series best tractors ever built IMO

Scrap the big CHROME PIPE idea and get a NEW MUFFLER . Do you know how much hearing aids cost . You could buy a 966 for what a set of them cost. My buddy's son was the same way when i rebuit the 1066 that his Dad bought off me HE wanted the big Stainless steel one with the curved tip . We tried to tell him but he knew better SO i pulled the brand new muffler back off and put HIS fancy Stainless Steel Curved tip one on and Eugene and i sent him off to plow . Yep about four hours was all it took and the MUFFLER went back on and has stayed on for the last 20 some years.

Change no muffler to a straight pipe. Your cillia in your inner ear will be snapped off at the base and you will loose hearing (I am that guy) neither wise or rational. A stainless muffler sure, Clean it up some and be verrry happy. Jim (with a constant high pitched (old TV picture tube) whistle in my head every waking moment.

Great story! I like just about all Red tractors. It's great to see a desire realized!

I've got a tractor in that category too... though I've got more than enough tractors than what's good for me. :D

Looks great. gotta love those 66 series. I looked for a 766 for a while, but no luck.

I put a DT468 in a 1086 a couple of years ago. It runs hard but when pulling a thirty foot field cultivator on a warm windy day you have to keep an eye on the temp. gauge!

yea i guess hearing protection will have to be in order, or leave it on. showers are fine two, when its raining i have two cab tractors to pick from.

Congrats on buying that cool tractor. The IH 66 series is the 57 chevy of the tractor world. They do look really cool with a big chrome stack. Buy the best set of ear muffs you can find and enjoy the ride.I have a 7 and always wanted a 10. Kent
