bad amp meter

Super A converted to 12v sometime at least 20+ years back. Several of the wires used were from the orginal harness. I went through and cleaned terminals and have it going good and will run it like it is for this season.

Question is it was swtiched to a 3 post key switch. When you turn on the switch it moves to the right to charge, when you start it, it goes to the left to discharge. I put the volt meter on it and I see that it is charging. Could it just be the amp meter is bad or is a wire probably crossed up, just making the meter read backwards.

Often if battery polarity (+ to -) has been changed Farmer Billy Bob forgets to reverse the ammeter leads and they read just bass ackwards. If its a coil distributor ignition instead of a Magneto the coil leads should have also been reversed if polarity was changed

As the others point out, you have a good ammeter wired backward.

Simply swap the wires between the two ammeter posts and it'll be good to go.

Thanks I'll swap it at the amp meter. My grandpa said my Great uncle was probably drunk how ever many years back he did it and laughed about it. It has worked so my grandpa has never really messed with it. He has given it to me and I'm going through and fixing somethings on it and getting it setup like I like.

Appreciate it folks!

Are you using a generator or an alternator?

If it has a generator my guess would be that it was left as positive ground and at sometime the battery was replaced and connected up as negative ground.
