Farmall 140 hydraulics strong enough for splitter?

Can the hydraulic system on the farmall run a log splitter? I have a char-Lynn pto pump that I can run instead. I will probably run the PTO pump anyways.

Yes, they are plenty strong enough.

However, they only flow about 3.5 GPM, which means the cycle time of the spliter will be slow.

The Charlynn PTO pump is 12GPM so it will be much faster.

For some people who work at a leisurely pace, it will be fine.

If you are trying to split as much wood in as little time as possible, or have used one of those self-contained horizontal/vertical units with the 22-30 GPM pumps before, you will be tearing your hair out after 15 minutes.

What side of the Char-Lynn PTO pump should I hook the splitter to?
There is a two way side, and a one way side.

There is a two way side, and a one way side.

So I hooked it up to the one way side. The output from the splitter valve dumps back in the top of the pump.
Works good. The splitter is heafty enough to probably apply up to 30 tons of pressure but the char lynn pump appears to have only enough pressure for about 15 tons or so. Works acceptably well though. I will probably keep my ear to the ground for some kind of stronger unit.

The one-way side was the correct choice given that the splitter has its own remote valve.

PSI output on the Charlynn is only like 1200 or 1500 (I've got one), so yeah, it won't push like a commercial splitter.

I think the Charlynn Powerpacs can be hooked to a 1000 RPM PTO for more output, so a chain drive with a 2:1 ratio would make it run faster.

Could you show a picture of how yours is mounted? Mine didn't come with a mounting bracket, and I botched up my first attempt so far.

Here it is. I ran the output from the splitter to the top. I had to create a new vent as the cap that went there was a vented cap. I just pulled the cover off and drilled a hole, put a fitting in, and put a hose on it.
Works well. The valve is leaky so I'll have to repair that with new o-seals. I will eventually be putting the 3 point hitch back on and the splitter will probably be a permanent resident on this tractor. There will be a loader on the front that will run off he tractor hydraulics.

Ah, you did what I did to mount the Charlynn pump. Homemade bracket and ended up using a stack of washers.
