39 M serial numer tag.

I picked up an early 39 M over the weekend and the tractor has no serial number tag nor has it ever been drilled for one. We cleaned the clutch housing up really good with a wire brush on a grinder and there are positively no holes drilled for one. The number on the block is 807 and it is also stamped 807 on the top of the right hand frame rail just behind the grill. I have never been around an early 39 before. Are all the early M and H tractors this way? Before any one asks yes it has all "I" casting numbers, F14 style oil level petcocks, and the early round pto with the curved lever. Thank You for your help.

Sure looks to me like your serial number is 807. I have a four digit serial number on my early H. It is 13xx. It is also stamped on the frame rail just like yours. You probably know they began with 501 so you have a VERY early M. Congratulations!

To add, my early H does have a serial number tag and it agrees with the other numbers. Could your tag be missing and the holes filled in with paint? If not, maybe a rarity. A factory screw-up? kelly

Part of the early M tractors came that way, and without a serial number plate. Common for the early M tractors before the diesels started being built to have a engine and chassis number the same.

I have serial number 782 and it does have a tag along with corresponding numbers on the block and side rail. The real early one like in the 500's or maybe even 600's did not have tags. I would say yours should have a tag.
