Farmall 544 Hydraulic Troubleshooting

Hello All!,
First time writing to the forum but have been reading a lot of posts.

I'm hoping that you can point me in the right direction. I picked up a Farmall 544. I hear a loud buzzing when the tractor engine runs and the buzzing gets louder when I turn the steering wheel. The buzz seems to come from between the power steering unit and the hydraulic pump. The floor also vibrates. The fuild is white (meaning it's water contaminated? Right?).

I thought that first I'd replace hy-trans fuild and filter. But don't know how to troubleshoot beyond that. I'd hate to buy a p/s unit on a guess...could I have a diverter issue?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Change the hytran fluid and the filter and you probably wont have any more noise. They will be noisy when the filter is pluged and you said the oil is white so its due for an oil and filter change.

Then just replace the fluid and the filter before you try anything else.

You can often salvage much of the fluid. Put it in the black plastic buckets it comes in and leave in the hot sun for a few weeks. Then siphon off the clear stuff without disturbing the water and crud that will have settled to the bottom. Filter it through fine cloth if you wish.

It takes a very long time for the water and crud to settle out of the fluid. Weeks. Months.

You may just want to buy new fluid for the sake of time.

I installed a new filter and trans/hydraulic fluid. The squealing/buzzing immediately stopped. I found a two leaks. Have to replace hose. Thanks John and Erick for advice on the changing out filter and fluid. Thanks mk - I did decide to place new fluid. Next project is to replace the temp/gas/oil/amp instrument.
