New Cub electrical system I.D.

Just acquired a non-running 1961 Cub with what looks like all original parts, generator system, etc.

It's been repainted and can't get much info on the ignition system..coil missing, etc.

How do I determine if the system is 12V or 6V?

I believe that cap, points, condenser, plugs will work either way, but it needs a coil.

So how can I tell?

I will assume it has no battery so you can't simply see what it is. People put wrong batteries in all the time anyway. A '61 Cub was originally 6-volts. So if it has the original generator, it is a 6-volt system. When people convert to 12-volts, they almost always change to an alternator, so with any generator it is LIKELY to still be a 6-volt system.

No absolute guarantee without checking part numbers or measuring output of the generator, but most people would just assume a generator is a 6-volt and go on.

One other issue is the ground was originally positive. If an alternator probably negative.
http://www.farmallcub dot com/dcms/ is a great resource Jim

is the starter long or short the 6 volt type is 8 inches long from the mounting bolts to the nose of starter and the 12 is 6 to 7 inches and also most 12s have a push button start switch

When I was rebuilding another Cub w/ 6-volt, and needed to check that starter operation by comparison, I actually borrowed this starter from this cub.

At 6 volts it turned the same, slow but adequate, no difference.

When I hooked up 12 volts momentarily it really SPUN!

So from that, and the starter dimensions, It's a 6 volt starter, and since it's probably the original generator, I'm going to go on the assumption it's a 6 Volt system and see how that assumption works out.

Thanks for all the shared thinkin'

you can use the 6 volt starter with a 12 volt battery but just don't crank for a long time maybe 5 to 10 seconds let let cool down for a minute
