656 gas want to put in 560 diesel engine in it

I got a 656 with a 263 gas I bought a 282
diesel out of a 560 is there any diffrents
in the 560 to the 656 diesel and will the
560 clutch fly wheel and starter work in
the 656 gas also are the front engine
mounts are different do I have to find a
different front cover any help will be
appreciated

Unless the 263 is completely shot and the 282 is fresh rebuilt, I would forget it. Even when new the 282's can be problematic. The 263 is an easy rebuild. If you need a diesel tractor I would look for something a little later with a better engine.

Pretty much... nothing.

The 656 has the smaller bell housing bolt pattern as the 460. Maybe the front mount will work, but everything in back is different.

You also might need different frame rails. On the bigger tractors the rear adapter plates are thicker on the diesels by about 1", and the frame rails are shorter by approximately the same amount.

Sure it will Find the right front timing motor plate from a 282 diesel out of a 656 or 706 use the rest off the gas engine rear parts some throttle linkage and air cleaner from 706 or 656 D return from pump to tank. After thought bore two holes in the 656 frame rails were the front motor plate sets on top the frame on the 560.

I'd look for a german d-310 or a melrose d-312 out of a later 666 or 686

Both really good engines

The d-312 is direct injection - no glow plugs to mess with

Should bolt right up

The rear adapter plate from the gas engine was also used for diesels so just reuse the back plate.

The flywheels are different between the 656D and 656G but they use the same clutch. The 560 starter will not work but the gas flywheel will bolt onto the diesel engine. They use the same crankshaft. I believe the diesel flywheel is heavier so the gas flywheel may cause the diesel to not run smooth. If you use a starter for a 656 diesel hydrostatic tractor (starter number 1113201) it will work with the gasoline flywheel. otherwise find a 656D flywheel and starter. I don't recall for sure but you may have to grind a bit off the bottom of the commutator end frame of the hydro starter for clearance on the center section. I don't remember it it was the gear drive or the hydro that needed that little bit of extra space.

As posted in an earlier reply if you mount the front of the engine on top of the frame rails as it was in the 560 you can probably get by without any changes to the front of the engine.

The exhaust hole in the hood will be on the wrong side and you will need the air cleaner duct pipes for a 656D.

If you can find a parted out 656D to get the items you need it should not be too bad a job.

They will bolt right up to the rear but that is when the problems start. The frame rails are different. The 666 and 686 series tractors both use frame rails bolted to the side of the center section rather than the front. They are also longer so the hood and steering lines won't fit. Those engines also use different radiators.

The 560 was in a salvage yard in western Wisconsin (many parts missing) the 263 engine is full of water and manifold is shot and cwrb froze up so there is not much left of the engine that's good

Just happen to be in the middle of a similar deal....only I am putting a 656 263 in a 560..only problem you should have is to just drill 2 holes in the top of the framerail for the front mountsas the later 656 mounts through the side...easy problem for you. I found out the hard way that the steering shaft on the 560 needs to go through where the later front mounts are..didn't discover it untill I was almost done ..or so I thought as it was about the last thing I had to do...oh well

we put a 5.9 cummins in a 656 got the adapter kit in penn. its a beast. there are a lot of 5.9 around. tom in ky

Well whaddya know? I should've looked at the parts books on the rear cover. They are the same part number for gas and diesel.

Ok, that solves getting the engine hung in the tractor.

I would think you should be able to find a 656 diesel flywheel at a salvage yard somewhere. They're pretty common. Not sure I'd trust the gas flywheel to be balanced right or be heavy enough to withstand the diesel's pounding.

You may have to work on the governor, I think. The 560 runs the engine at 1800RPM, but the 656 is 2100 or 2400 IIRC.
