Farmall A engine removal

I am ready to remove the engine from my 1947 A. With the use of my "cherry picker", where are/is the best lifting points ? In other words, how do I attach the chains to the engine to enable the removal ?

Mark, what I have always done is remove the cylinder head first, then used a short chain from the forward most cylinder stud to one near the rear of the block on the opposite side. It balances well, and the 1/2" studs have plenty of strength. It always seemed to me there were no other bolts in the right place or strong enough.

Do what Charlie suggested on removing the head first then connecting your lift chain to the engine block. I did this in 1975 on the Farmall A I bought with the stuck engine. You need to block under the drawbar before pulling the engine since the tractor will rock over backwards.

There are dowels on the tractor and you may need to rock the engine side to side easily to clear the dowels. I used a small pinch bar to help pry them off. They make it easy when reinstalling the engine. I put lubri-plate on them when installing the engine. I also had the clutch disc reline before installing the engine. The sleeve kit cost $80.00 back in 1975 from our local IH dealer. Hal

I have always used a cherry picker on the head bolt studs like CharlieNJ described. It has worked well for me.

Thanks all for the speedy replies ! The tractor is completely stripped - jack stands under the final drives, and a stand made of angle iron is bolted to the transmission housing. It appears to be well-balanced for engine removal. I do not envision the tractor flipping over backwards. Any thoughts ?
