660 rearends

Actually after the first year repairs, the 4 and 560 were fine.

I've heard the 660 was the true problem child of the group.

The 660's rear end is, for all intents and purposes, identical to the 560's except for the planetary gear reductions at the wheels.

All IH did was run the 560's engine 33% faster (2400 vs. 1800 RPMs), and then gear it down 33% with the planetaries.

Near the end of 1959 on up both 560 and 660 were built with the same basic transmissions, differential and bull gears. Except the 660 used axles with planetary gear reduction on the outboard ends. 660 was built with more engine power and RPM though. Planetary at axles were supposed to lessen the load on the forward drive parts.
Don't know of a working one in my area, so have no first hand knowledge of how successful they were.
