change to IH distributor

Looks like IH distributers changed somewhere in the 60's for the old Farmalls as I have seen point sets with dates for use on tractors before the 60's and after the change date (can't remember the actual date). I know I've bought points by mistake for the newer distributor and they don't work in my pre 1950 tractors. What prompted the change.

Are you sure?

I have a 1967 Cub with the original distributor on it. Uses the same points as my 1953 letter series tractors.

IH came out with the 6-cylinder gas engine tractors in 1958, and they definitely had a different distributor than the older 4-cylinder tractors. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

You are, to the best of my understanding, correct. I think there is only one tuneup kit for IH OEM distributors for 4 cylinder engines. YT parts lists from A to 450 as compatible (except Mags Delco and autolite) Jim

I originally typed this at work so now that I am home I went out and looked at the package I still have. It says for IH battery ignitions 1963 and higher.Nothing about number of cylinders. The points don't work in my 43 M which has a distributor.

1963 was when the 706 came out. The distributor on those used a off set stationery point. All the IH distributors before that from Cub to 560 used the same points. 353172R was the part number but has since been changed. The H4 magneto for all those four cyl tractors used a 353171R set of points. Lord knows, I put I a few thousand over the years. On another note, I find after market part numbers to be all over the place, some right, some wrong.

In addition to the stationary arm being offset the rubbing block on the movable points are installed in the other direction.

1963 may have been when the later style points were released but not all four cylinder engines were changed at that time. My 1967 2444 still uses the older style. If you look in the engine book for the C153 the distributor for the 444 still shows using the older points but the newer style is also listed for other applications of the same engine using a different distributor.

my 1958 560 is all original and uses the newer style points, not like the ones in the previous 450 for example.
