Here's another question. I have 2 different engine oil filler
castings to choose from. One is square and the other has an
arm on it. I'm guessing it has something to do with the
governor. I have both governors. Which style is the best?

I'm guessing what your calling the square one is the older one for the single speed governor. The one with the arm is the later for the variable speed governor(or maybe a field change update). On the earlier IH tractors of this timeframe, the governor only worked when you had the engine revved up and working around it's rated rpms. The later ones (became std equipment around 1937 I think) governed the engine speed to maintain whatever RPM you wanted depending on where you had the "throttle" set. If you are going for originality on your tractor, get a parts book and figure out what would have come on it from the factory. If you're going to be using the tractor and you have or can get all the parts that go with it, use the one with the arm.

Thanks Jeff. I was thinking it was this way. What was confusing me was the fact that the plain housing was coming off a 1938 block and the housing with the arm came off a 37 model with a block from a Regular. Gotta love all the updates available for the F-20.

Tom, the tractor is a hybrid. It started out as a 37 model with
an engine from a Regular. I wanted to modernize it with foot
brakes and electric start, so I bought the remains of a 38 that
had the correct block for the V pulley fan and factory foot
brakes. The electric start components I bought separately.
Starting to put it all together and it has been a real learning
experience. I have worked on H and M's, but this is different.

Here is what an original one with the arm looks like, would be original to a 37 model with variable speed governor. Will require the flat metal (as opposed to the earlier cast) front fuel tank bracket and cross shaft along with the left hand throttle setup

This is the earlier style square single speed governor on my W30, F20 is the same.

Hey thanks for the info and pics. The first picture is the way I
will go. I have it complete with an extended throttle rod.

(quoted from post at 06:48:19 05/01/14) Would the 10-20 be the same?
What year 10-20? They also got a variable speed governor in late 37. I only have one 10-20 and its a 25 with the single speed governor it looks exactly like the one on the W30.

Thank you;Mine is a 1928 so it would be the single.
I guess I should know I used to farm with it back in
the early 60's I sure don't remember the gov. working any
place but wide open. I know the old girl would
really lug down when plowing.

36F30 that top pic is IH"s version of the field change over kit. The middle is the single speed gov set up. And the 3rd is a different aftermarket change over kit I"m not sure I"ve seen before. Could be Heisler but not sure from here.

It's probably a Heisler, the rest of my 30 is covered with Heisler accessories including the overdrive, behind the axle footbrakes, and Hi power pistons. It also had a Heisler gas manifold but it was broken. This style variable speed is very common here, then again we're only 100 miles from where Heisler was based. You got a pic of an original 37 variable speed setup?
