Farmall F-12 update and more problems..

I finally got the F12 running again after cleaning out the bypass at the top of the gas
tank which was clogged. I had it running for a good 40 minutes without problems. When I
went to move it, it backed up fine but stalled and seemed like it was under a load when
i put it in second. The spark was weak so I put a new mag i know is good on it and it
started up after a good amount of cranking. My problem is that later it began stalling
like it did the other day like it was flooding except i checked and the bypass is
clean. Its not flooding as bad as before but its still doing it. I have the carb apart
and it appears clean. It seems to only begin giving me problems when i throttle up a
lot. I also have a noise coming from the fan/magneto area that i cant find and i dont
see any grease/oiling points for the fan and it is getting worse.
My question is does anyone have the carb adjustments and the float adjustments for the
normal f12/f14 carb? Also any idea on the noise by the fan? Thanks for all the help,
this is my first F12 and I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

To watch the video search: 1937 Farmall F-12/F-14 Engine Break in Part 2
The engine noise can be heard in it, thanks.

The noise is the timing gear on the mag drive or the mag itself. As far as seeming to labor an advance of the timing by moving the cover on the mag should help that. The stalling i would blame on float level too high but there is a screw that you can turn in till the engine gets no gas so somewhere between there and black smoke is good.It takes more fuel to run retarded and barks more too. Video audio is quite often misleading but it doesnt sound like you are hitting on all four

hold the top half of carb upside down and set float level, as in level position. that's all it takes. I believe the main jet is 21/2 turns out if I remember. also if you don't have an inline filter in it then you may be picking up bits of rust particules from tank, as sediment bowl probably has the screen missing as most do. it just takes one small flake and your screwed. the gas is pumped with force and causes this problem. not like gravity where it settles out. then carb has to come off and blow it out. make sure the passages are free.
the fan hub you need to add oil to it.

There is a way to lube the fan hub. There is a slotted stud that's kept in place by a jam nut. Turn the fan around until you see it. It's located on the body of the fan hub directly behind the fan blades. Your bearing is probably dry. You are supposed to turn the hub till the opening is sideways, remove the stud, fill with oil till it runs out, then replace the stud. Don't let it run dry! Hope you can figure out what I mean!

Okay, I believe I left the float in that position but I'll double check. Which jet is the main jet and what is the other jet then and what is the setting for that jet? I have a new screen in the sediment bowl so I'd think that would take care of it. As for the fan, how do I add oil to it? I don't see anywhere to do that. There is a big screw on it, does that come out and you add oil there? And what kind of oil is best? I think i know what you mean Mike. Thanks for all the help.

yes add 80-90 gear oil to the big screw.
main jet is on bottom. other is mixture screw and 3/4 - 1 turn out is good.

Okay, thanks. I will try that. Probably should have also mentioned that i have to start it in the run position because it runs rough in advanced position. It's timed barely after TDC to prevent risk of kickback. Is it advised to push the timing back to right on TDC? Now that i think about all the problems and how it sounds a bit off, it might be part of the problem. Thanks.

Sounds like its only running on 3 cylinders to me, and the fan noise sounds like either its hitting or its the mag clicking. If you can run it with the mag advanced, then its not timed right.

The float setting on mine is lower than spec. No matter what I did I could not get it to run right at spec. Guy on here suggested putting an extra gasket under the seat, and worked like a charm. I left it alone and it has een running better ever since. Its been giving me a fit starting sometimes, but it runs great.

I'm pretty sure its running on all four cylinders but I know what you mean and will double check because I know its just not running right. It has the correct new spark plugs and i put a new mag on off another tractor that runs perfectly. I know its not the mag making the noise because I changed it and when I shut it off it makes a bad grinding sound. I was just told how to add oil to the fan bearings so that may take care of the noise. I may try adjusting the float if the other adjustments don't work. The carb seems to work fine except that it occasionally just dumps gas, usually when i throttle up or begin driving. It will give me trouble and then run fine the next day until it does it again. Aren't you supported to be able to start it at advanced and then switch it to run? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to finally get this going right. Thanks for all the help.

Sorry, that's what i meant. Just to clarify, when the arm is down position it is running, horizontal is starting position, and up is off. Right? Thanks.
