IH 2544 Shifting

IH2544

New User
I recently bought an old International / Farmall 2544 w/gas engine.
According to what I can find out so far,
It has a TA which seems to work just fine, it is controlled by the lever to the left of the steering wheel.
The lever on the right side of the steering wheel seems to only move three positions:
Forward, neutral, and reverse.

The Tractor data site says the tractor is either a hydro or has a 5 speed transmission, effectively 10 with the TA

Can anyone help?

There is a selector mechanism with slotted "gates" below the steering wheel that permits the lever to move left and right only when in neutral. Yours is buggered up so that it"s trapped in the leftmost position, perhaps due to damage to the gate. If you take the cover plate below the wheel off you"ll be able to see the linkage. Don"t take it apart without a shop manual, though.

The right shifting lever should move in a standard "H" pattern like a 5-speed manual transmission.

Pop the cap off the end of the base of the shift lever, and squirt some penetrating lube in there. Then gently work the shift lever back and forth, side to side, feeling for the "gate" where the lever can move sideways. Some wiggling, some jiggling, and maybe a good smack or two, with the penetrating lube, should knock the rust free.

We had the same problem with a recently-acquired 656 that uses the same shift mechanism. It was gummed up from sitting for several years.
