How to identify H head

There are numbers under the valve cover on top of the head, near
the middle. Once I had one where they had been ground off, never
did figure that one out. My H manual only shows kerosene,
distillate and gasoline heads, their numbers are 6186, 8776 and
8043 respectively. I hope someone will be along who knows what
to look for, but if it shows any of those numbers at least you will
know it is not an LP head. That said, any head that is not cracked is
likely worth well over $20.

IH didn't make a LP head for a H. For that series engine they used a LP head on a 300 and 350. To tell the 300, 350 LP head by just a look.
Go to parts and pieces on the left of page in classic. Put 450 LP head in the search box, look how its made above the intake and exhaust ports compared to other heads. The 300 LP head will look almost the same. Couldn't find a 300 picture.

There are NO LP heads for an H. The LP option was not available from the factory untill the Farmall 300 was introduced, therefore, the only LP heads you will find that will fit an H would be the head from a 300 or 350, and would NOT have the same part numbers as any of the H heads.

A Farmall H propane conversion was an aftermarket thing.
