756 lifter ticking

I fired up my 756 after sleeping for the winter
and I noticed a ticking noise coming from the
right side of the engine, sounds like its coming
from just below the head. I'm thinking it could
be a lifter making this noise? I let it run for
about an hour just above idle, the noise is still
there, but that engine sure sounds nice. It
doesn't seem like this lifter issue is effecting
the engine much or at all. Should I be concerned
about this? Do you think it is a lifter? Could it
be anything else? It looks like I can take the
side cover off of the engine to take a closer
look, even taking the valve cover off doesn't look
to hard. I guess I'm just wondering what you
think this noise could be and what you would do
about it if it were yours.

I'm totally comfortable with opening up the engine
if thats what needs to be done. I'm hoping to do a
little moldboard plowing with it in a few weeks.

well engine type would helfp her GAS or diesel ??? Either way the LIFTER tick if it is that needs a valve adjustment and you would not hear that DOWN below the valve cover Either engine has a flat tappet cam and they are not Hyd. lifters they are solid lifters . Now setting hear i can not hear YOUR TICK and i would only be guessing . May be nothing to worry about and it could mean something serious . .

Thanks for your reply Tractor Vet. This tractor has the 310 German Diesel. I really think this is a lifter tick. Sometimes its louder than others, but never anything like a knock, just a psst psst kinda tick. My concern is, is this effecting the engine performance at all? Is this valve opening all the way? If I decide to open it up and replace the lifter, how big of job am I looking at?

As the Vet indicates there are solid lifters in the engine, they do not adjust or need replacement. Adjust the valves in the engine (valve cover off) and follow the directions. If it is still there after the adjustment, it is not the valve train (lifters pushrods, rockers, valves) Good luck, and keep listening to it. it could be a piece of carbon on the piston and will go away. if it gets worse stop before it eats expensive parts.
