Farmall B belt drive questions

The output shaft bearing cage and main housing to trans show metal shims but no gaskets. I am trying to figure out how this won"t leak oil. Do the shims prevent oil seepage? I am thinking of putting a thin coating of plastic gasket on the shims for insurance but maybe someone can explain this design. I would think the housing would have oil since it is common to the transmission case.

Common practice to use metal shims. Carefully clean them, make sure any nicks are smoothed out, & use a very thin coating of silicone to assemble.
Never had any leaks this way.

As I recall, there is an o-ring inside that should keep oil from getting to the area where the shims are.

There were early and late PTO designs so this may not apply to yours. Check the diagrams in the parts catalog.

Becker has it correct. Look closely at the parts diagram. There is an o ring that goes in there to seal off the oil. This may not have been in earlier designs, but it was in my 1946 A. The reality of these is that they are gonna leak a little somewhere!
