Drawbar pivot pin

I need a drawbar pivot pin but i'd rather not pay $20 for it. Anyone know the size of the pin and what I can use instead? I was thinking of cutting a Grade 5 bolt to length but does it have to be smooth? thanks, ~Anthony

Well, I don`t have an M , but as far as using a bolt, it should work. If you don`t want the threads to be where it wears, get a longer bolt of the size you need. Threads don`t go the whole length of bolt, just get one with long enough shank and cut to desired length.

That pin is way more than just a cut-off bolt. Pay the $20 and be happy.

Keep in mind, it's pretty much the only thing keeping whatever is behind your tractor, behind your tractor, out of your lap, and out of anyone else's lap. You generally want to use the "right" part when it comes to something like that, and $20 is a small price in comparison.

I don't think a bolt will fit right in the hole. Either the hole is an odd size, or even if it is the same NOMINAL size as a bolt, the bolt will be a few thousandths undersize and loose in the hole. Loose is bad. Loose gets to chucking and wallowing.

You want a good tight fit in the drawbar casting and belly of the tractor.

Get a piece of plain mild steel round stock. I am going by memory here, but I think it is 1-1/4" in diameter. Don't use a bolt, you would have to cut off the threads and the head, plus a bolt that size will probably cost you $20

You can also get precision round stock that has a more precise diameter. Expect to pay $5-$10 at the steel yard.

1-1/4 diameter and about 3-3/4 long for a M. If the pivot anchor was upgraded to a later one, about 4-3/8 long. Not going to pull a 1-1/4 into in that short space with a M unless you wear it out thinner.
Old M or SM reverse idler gear shafts made shorter wear pretty good.

One H that I owned actually had a piston wrist pin serving that purpose. I thought something looked odd about it, so I dropped it out for a closer look. The wrist pin went to the iron pile. I made a new pin from a slightly worn drawbar hitch pin.

(quoted from post at 13:17:00 04/18/14) You are not going to save much buying a big bolt and cutting it.

Yea the last big bolt I bought like that was maybe 6 inches long cost me like $14.

Have you got one of these laying around? These are for a ford truck I was told. The spline end is about 1 1/4". A little bit bigger towards the middle. The material is 4140 I was told, which is some very tuff stuff. A truck repair shop would probably have these in their scrap bin. Don't hurt to ask. If you lived closer, I'd give you one.

Best regards
