SA locked engine

Have a Super A that I use for mowing. Ran fine last summer, have cranked and run it a few times this winter. Went out today to use it, engine will not turn over. Thought it was the battery but after charging it, still would not budge. So I get out the old crank, lo and behold the engine will not turn. Rocking back and forth in gear will not turn the engine. Has been probably 6 weeks since last run. Any suggestions for what to try next?

Remove all the sparkplugs then see if the engine will move by cranking. You may have coolant on top of a piston causing a hydrostatic lock. If there's no coolant on any of the pistons your pistons may be stuck in the sleeve usually from rust. You probably will need to remove the cylinder head. Hal

Its a common problem that the starter may be stuck and causing the engine to not turn over.

Quick check anyways to pull the starter and then try it before you get too deep into it.

I have seen it on 2 IH machines once on a super A and once on my Hough loader.

Like Bill stated, pull the starter first. The one I grew up driving did that quite often. It was caused by the bendix jamming in the flywheel. Usually just cracking the bolts a little and a good wiggle would free it up. A starter rebuild finally fixed the problem.

brian & bill are right, and check that. Ussually rocking the wheels back and forth with transmission in high gear will get it back right again without removing the starter. First you might make sure the cylinders are not full of rain water or antifreeze. If it is seized from rust, it can't be seized much since not set long. If so, a squirt or two of oil in the spark plug wholes and let sit awhile and rock the wheels in gear will more than likely free it up. If you got anitfreeze in cylinders, you got problems, a crack or bad head gasket.

Like the guys said - check the starter first. You may also want to find out if its locked in 2 gears at the same time. If you push in the clutch and can turn the engine then that's your problem.

do you cover exhaust pipe ? if not wet shiny cylinders do rust and prevents piston movement.
so many people ignore exhaust covering.

It was a locked starter. Just loosened the bolts, did not have to remove it, tightened it back and presto, it cranked and ran like new.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
