Super M disc brakes vs W450

I'm assuming the disc brakes on a Super M are identical to the units on a W450? If this is the case are the pinion gears the same? I may have a slipping M&W hand clutch and might want to just put the factory components back in until I get the hand clutch rebuilt if it isn't too big of a job switching over. Thanks, Sam

Yes the bull pinion, bull pinion retainer, brake drum actuator and discs, adjusting bolt and brake lever on the end of the clutch shaft will interchange between those tractors. If never changed the SM drum will have a R1 ending cast number and the W-450 R2.
All can be removed and installed from the left side on a SM.

AFAIK, installing the standard brake and bull pinion parts on an SM is not nearly as difficult as it is on a regular M.

On an M, you have to take the top cover off the transmission, remove the left axle and bull gear to get the bull pinion cage out of the tractor. Possibly the differential, too.

I think you can remove the SM's bull pinion without doing all that work.

I haven't seen much in the way of parts for them, also it's
currently missing the lever. Any good sources out there? Even
if I pull it off I plan to return it to the tractor after getting it fixed.
Just looking for a short term solution. Thanks, Sam.

I have quite a few parts, sold my last handle but you can make that from 5/8 rod. (does not need the bend, I made mine straight to suit me) I have the knobs, outer bearings, leather boots for the handles, I believe I have a good complete set of used friction discs or can get some new ones made up. The seals are available from any good supply house.

Maybe put up a couple pics of it.....

I think you can replace cage for pinion by working thru the PTO hole. Remove bull gear bolt and slide gear off as you pull axle out some.

On a late M and SM tractors with disc brakes the differential carrier and bull pinion housing on the right in the picture doesn't need removed to remove and install the bull pinion gear. M&W hand clutch uses a different bull pinion gear than shown. Bull pinion bearing retainer and brake plate on left is replaced with a plate to mount the band brake and clutch and brake cover on the M&W. Special bolts mount the plate to the differential carrier retaining bolts. Even though the differential carrier isn't removed from the transmission housing original IH size bolts need to go back when changed to original.

mkirsch was talking about taking the trans top off on a regular M. I should have mentioned Regular M in my post.
Thanks for info on later models.
Sounds like an improvement to me.
