engine identity in an M

I have a farm sale purchased M and I think the engine has been replaced with an engine from a later series tractor. the tractor S/N is from 1949 but the engine does not have petcocks on the oil pan and does have an oil dipstick with a heavy cast handle. how does tell if an engine is from an M , super M, 400, or 450?

Up above the oil filter and below the head a M block will have a cast number with 4 numbers and a one or 2 letter suffix following, like DA or DJ ETC.. Others have a 6 number casting # ending in R1 or R2 and will also most always have the engine size below the casting number. C-248, C264 or C-281.
