H gear oil leak

Hi, I have a 40 H and it's leaking gear oil by the hyd pump. Looking at the book it seems if I drop the pump there is a shaft that I can remove and get to the rear end input seal without splitting the thing. Am I on the right track, or just wishful thinking?

Check the surface the the seal rides on real good. I have seen them not seal up with new seals if they are too worn.

I do not know if they make speedy sleeves for them.

The coupling on the trans turns lefty loosy (right hand threads) use a 1/2" piece of bar stock, to turn it with the tractor in high gear brakes locked or blocked wheels. Usually takes a great deal of force or impact to remove. Jim

Thanks for the help guys. That was a deal breaker for me... if I had to split it she would probably be gone. I'll tackle that after I get my green money pit (39 B) up and running.

Very straight forward job. I had a difficult time getting the 2-bolt drive coupler off, it was stuck on with a slightly-deformed Woodruff key. I finally got it, but it was time-consuming. Sopme guys have no problem.
Belly pump does not HAVE to come out, as I recall.

If I don't need to take the pump off that would be great. I just fired the old girl up after sitting all winter, popped right off. She would make a good tractor ride tractor.

OK, looking at the I&T service manual, (I hate those things) that the countershaft seal could also be the culprit. Anyway, I keep getting ahead of myself (A.D.D.), first the B then the H. How do you eat an elephant?... One bite at a time. I need to keep telling myself that.

There are 2 possible leak points if smelly gear oil is leaking (and not Hydraulic oil). The trans input shaft seal (mutch harder and does require pump removal, and countershaft driven pump coupler seal (Much lower in the trans) The lower one is easy, the upper one requires removing the clutch shaft and coupler to the trans input shaft. No split, but awkward. Many posts in the archives. Jim
