B414 International

I am considering buying a 1961 B414 International tractor. Does anyone have any feedback for me about this model? Any design flaws I should know about? I noticed that the PTO can only shift to off when the tractor is turned off and the same thing happens to engage the PTO, the tractor must be off. I wonder if this is normal operation or not? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

That is not normal PTO operation, are you pushing the clutch completely down? If so it sounds like the PTO clutch may be stuck. Is it gas or diesel? They aren't a bad tractor, steering and steering boxes can be weak especially with a loader. Brake are also not that great and a lot of work to repair if they're leaking oil. Otherwise solid tractors. Sam

Thanks for the info. It is a 4 cylinder Diesel.

Normally should it be a two stage clutch?
Also, when you say the clutch could be stuck, does that mean it can be un-stuck? If so, is there a certain way to do that without splitting the tractor apart?
This tractor has no loader and only has 1350 hours on it, so the brakes seemed real good. She wants to get $3000 for it. It is in really good shape and only has a few minor issues (slow leak in rear tire and a slight draw on the battery that runs down the battery in a week or so). I was thinking of offering $2500 especially since you are saying the clutch is stuck.

Should be a two stage clutch. What can happen if a tractor sits a lot (especially in a damp climate) is the clutch disc sticks to either the pressure plate or the flywheel. I've had it happen on the main clutch on a 414 before. Sometimes they can be unstuck without splitting the tractor. You need to get a good load on it and hold the clutch pedal disengaged (for a PTO clutch I'd want it on a dyno). I'd also make sure the adjustment was okay first.

It sounds like a great tractor with that few hours on it it'd be hard to beat even if you have to pay full price. It'd go for more than that near me. I much prefer the diesel engine in those. Good luck, Sam

I think they are great tractors and often under-rated. Great parts accessibility too. They were basically remade new with different sheet metal a few years ago by Mahindra. So parts for your B-414 are available new from Case-IH, new from Mahindra, new aftermarket, etc.

The stuck PTO clutch is very common. It's a typical two-stage clutch but they seem prone to sticking in the British B-275s and B-414s. I've got four of the same basic tractors and two are stuck right now. One - I took apart - found nothing visibly wrong. No stuck disk either. Put it all back together and it worked fine for a month and then got stuck again. I never bothered to work on it further. It works fine. Just have to idle the engine down to almost "off" and then engage. Still works fine as a live PTO. Whatever causes it - it is NOT a stuck disc in mine and not an adjustment. Even stuck - it works much nicer then my Ford 641 or Case VAC with the non-live PTO.
Only flaw is with the diesels and their awful 1 volt glow plug system with the plugs all in series. Change it to 12 volt plugs in parallel and works MUCH better.

So, I bought this tractor and as soon as I unload it the brakes locked up and the power-assist steering got really hard to use. I am waiting for a manual to come in the mail but was wondering if anyone has any idea what could be going on. I thought maybe the hyd. fluid was really low, but when I opened the plug a lot of fluid came pouring out. Maybe the hydraulic pump went bad? How could I test that? When the manual comes I'll have a sense of where the fill line is but just curious to hear if I am on the right track.
