The governor on my 300 is really touchy. Maybe this is normal, but at the slightest hint of a load she comes alive and will really snort. It reared up plowing with pull type when I hit a tough spot. Its almost scary at times, it don't stick or anything but it just turns into an animal once in awhile. I have never had a tractor with a governor this sensitive. Something out of adjustment or should I just leave alone and enjoy the way it is?

I would enjoy and leave it alone (assuming not dangerous). Frankly, I would be happy it is so responsive - lets you know the engine is not worn out too as a tired engine will often not respond even with a snappy governor.
FWIW: Most old timer's claim Allis Chalmers always had the snappiest most responsive governors back in the 1950's which allowed their tractors to frequently outperform their hp ratings due to this.

I have a 56 farmall 300 that i have owned for about 8 years now, always had a very snappy governor. I will be out bailing hay, get in a heavy spot and the throttle jumps then slowly comes back down until the next heavy spot. Personally I love the way the governor responds and wish more of my tractors were that way.

Put some weight on the front. Doing unexpected wheelies is a bit unnerving. If it is not over speeding, but just opening up the throttle all is well. But if it is increasing RPM it is not correct. A sticky throttle plate, linkage or governor internals can cause the problem. Ask yourself if it increases in RPM or just gets louder as it pulls down to maximum governed speed. It should only get slower in RPM from wide open, or from any throttle position, never increase. Jim
