656 gear problem. Help!

I have a 656 that I did a clutch and ta job. First time digging into something like that on an ih. Got the whole thing together and dealer came and set clutch for me today since I got a lot of parts from them. The problem is the gear shifter slides like no problem. It used to be clear when I would move it into and out of gear. Now it slides so easy that you almost can't tell. I have all the pins in the thing. Never took the top apart just the bottom of the linkage where it goes into the shifter rods ps it a gear drive. Any ideas?? I pray I didn't screw something up and it needs to come apart again!! It is acting like its stuck in between gears and only slides easy on some gears others it acts like it won't go into gear

My guess is that the shifter was put in such that it didn;t get into the neutral gate.
Pull the shifter, align the slots, carefully insert the lever and give it a try. Jim

Do all three of the rails move back and forth in and out of transmission . You can easily move them from under the battery. Did you take the small plate off on top of transmission cover to disconnect the shift levers. The part the levers pivot on. That is where the poppet springs are under and the balls are under the springs.

It is not a plate to look into the transmission. It is just a small plate that the L shaped levers pivot on and under that plate is the detent springs and balls. I just thought you may have taken it off to disconnect the linkages going to the shift rails . Really hard to tell from here what your problem is with your description. If your shift lever moves freely back and forth, is it actually moving the shift rails or is it out of sync up above.

I took off the plate on the floor of the tractor that the linkage goes through, it's triangular kind of and had four bolts holding it to the top if the transmission housing underneath the floor plate. But I think your talking there are springs up in the top of the linkage in the dash right? I consulted the manual and see what you're referring to I think. Sorry I didn't describe the problem well. The gear shifter moves freely in neutral, then it'll go into say 3rd fine but then when you go back to neutral and go to fourth, it doesn't want to go into up into gear at all. You have to go back to third and play with it. When I let the clutch out in gear it strains and acts like it may be in two gears or perhaps inbetween. I don't get how that could be, when I did put the tractor back together I pulled the shifter rods to neutral so I could roll the halves together. Then I put the shifter in neutral, pulled all the pins out to the same length and re attached the linkage. Is that how it's done? Is neutral when all shifter rods are even? Before splitting the tractor everything in shifting was tight and it was very clear when it popped from gear to neutral.. I guess what I'm saying is it seems too easy to move the shifter sometimes and the only time it gets hard is when it won't go into gear.... Sorry for being so long winded this something you kinda go to see to diagnose..

The springs are under that little plate with four bolts. They are what hold the balls down that are inside the holes under the springs and that is what makes it snap into neutral and into gear.

You are welcome. Had me wondering what I was missing for a while. Hey, one time I just got done bolting a 1566 back together and saw this little nylon tube laying in my tool box in plain site so as I would not misplace it. That tractor came apart and back together really quick.
