My son took his 4DLT battery to the starter repairman and it checked out perfect. Told him what was going on with it not turning over quite fast enough to crank. Repairman said he was gonna get it starting for him. Ordered 6 volt field coils for the starter for $40 and is not going to charge my son for anything. Gonna put larger cables on also. Said it would spin much faster with the only drawback being the brushes might not last as long.
5 years instead of ten. Also told my son if that doesn't fix it, he is coming out to the farm and check things himself.
This starter man is about 72 and has been in business forever. Has several patents to his credit and has the reputation in this area as being the best.
Will keep you updated.

When in doubt ask an old phart! The guys that have been around know things that aren't in a repair manual and work just as good. The neighbor took a tractor into Deere for a priority with the understanding that only the oldest tech will work on it. If I were an owner of a implement dealership I would give favor to the older applicants. Probably not legal in the days of "be nice to everyone".

Make sure he gets paid whether he wants it or not.

Years ago, I had a Cat D2 and needed to take a track off to work on steering clutch. Tried driving the master pin out and had no luck. Called Cat in Atlanta and asked the shop foreman to let me speak to the oldest worker he had. Yep, he said, on the D2 you thread a rod in it and use a puller. I find myself asking for the older guys now for a lot of things. Course I am getting pretty old myself.
