M fuel shut off

I have a 1950 M I just picked up last weekend (first red tractor). Anyway when I bought it the guy said he had never shut off the fuel and the 90 degree bend where you turn it off or on was facing 3 o'clock so figuring it was like my 51 Deere I turned it 90 degrees to 12 o'clock to shut off the gas when I parked it. I could smell gas when I was cleaning off the carb monday night and when I went out tonight there is gas leaking from the bottom of the carb and at the sediment bowl, so I turned it back to 3 o'clock. So how do you shut off the gas on the sediment bowl? Turn it 90 degrees or is it a screw in shut off type? Thanks

Everything I have turns righty to tighty. Sounds fishy that it leaked when you fiddled with the valve. I'd be checking the float and needle valve in the carb before you lose lots of gas on the shed floor.

It ran fine when I tested it and each time I have started it, but a carb rebuild is in the near future anyway, plus he didn't leave much gas in the tank.

Did you screw the shut off valve clockwise until it come to a stop? Sounds to me like its not shut off. Is the gas leaking around bowl coming from bowl or the shut off valve. Have seen packing around shut leak.

I was able to screw it all the way in and it should stop now. I had a small drip at the sediment bowl itself, but a bowl I used to catch cleaning solution when I cleaned the carb was left under the carb and I noticed the fluid level had come up,about an inch tonight and that is how I discovered the gas was leaking. Thanks for all your help!

obviously you need sediment bowl gaskets also along with a carb disassembly and cleaning, and sediment bowl valve cleaning, pretty quick you would find you need to screw valve in to stop fuel flow.

I would rebuild the sediment bowl first. The kit is only about 6 bucks. To shut off the gas then screw in until it stops. Those pieces are brass so do not over tighten. Rule of thumb for gas on is all the way out then back in 1/2 turn. Rebuild the carb if it needs it and DONT BUY A CHEAP ONE!

As you've discovered the sediment bowl valve is a "globe" type valve, not a ball valve.

Make sure you turn it all the way on or all the way off, or else you will get leaks around the packing.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I have restored a couple of tractors and worked on plenty more so I do know my way around a sediment bowl, but have just never played with one on a farmall as I have been a green guy for the most part.

Correct, globe valve and not ball valve, so it has to be screwed in. I screw them all the way in to block and all the way out open.

All the tips mentioned are good, here's another; you say it's almost out of gas? now is the time to remove the sediment bowl assembly from the tank and clean everything. mine had a long blade of straw or something sticking in the valve seat causing it to not seal well. it also had a bunch of stuff in the sediment bowl inlet that you couldn't see or clean without taking the assembly off the tank.
