I"m concerned about breaking the pulley when I take it off. I was considering using moderate heat, maybe 200 degrees and tapping lightly with a brass hammer to ease it off.
Do you think the cast iron could stand that?
Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your good advice.

Put a bearing separator tool behind the pulley and use a 3 finger puller to pull the pulley off after heating it. That way you won't bend the pulley.

How are you going to tap? There isn't room between the pulley and the block to swing much of a hammer.

Even with heat you still need a bearing separator behind the pulley, and a puller.

This has to be the most asked question on this forum. If it is not the Cub, it is the A, B, or C. There are even some excellent diagrams and photos of the equipment needed to remove that pulley without breaking it if you search the archives. Roger

You need to make or have it made like what Bigdog made for his Cub using a bottle jack or a hydraulic ram. You still need split bearing puller. I had one made in the local metal shop. They punched the holes for the all thread using a hydraulic press. Hal

Here's how I removed my pulley. Use a bearing separator and large 2 jaw puller. I think its a 5/8" 13 NC bolt used to push against after threading into the crankshaft. Drill a shallow center hole in the bolt for the puller to ride in. You'll may need a short and longer bolt to remove completely. Using heat can help prevent damage. In my case I didn't have heat so I carefully applied pressure and it eventually came off. A large wrench on the puller keeps it from turning while pressure is applied by my socket wrench.

Thanks gents! Some excellent responses. I"m off to get a bearing separator--never would have thought of that. Roger is right--we should use the archives more.
