New (to me) SMTA Pics

I posted a question a while back as to value of a smta as I've never owned one. I've had countless other Farmalls but never a SMTA. I followed my gut, and it followed me home. It runs great and I love the power stearing. I won't say what I gave except to say it was less than 2k.

I'll eventually get the right grill, and lights, but what's on there now works. It's got fenders from a 560 on it I'd like to swap out with some clamshell fenders. I've got the seat replacement covered already.

I just think that"s one of the biggest bargains out there; disc brakes, power-house, power steering, TA, 3-point, EZ to work on, tall in the saddle, parts everywhere, all for under $2K. What a bargain.

You probably didn't get hurt. But think you need to check it over some if wanting original parts. Unless it has a MD or a SMD upper bolster the hood is probably not a SMTA also. Some other parts didn't come on a SMTA also. Best I can tell in the picture it does have a SMTA clutch housing.
Don't want to run down your tractor. It has enough extras to be a good user tractor the way it is. Good luck with it.

I realize some stuff has been changed over the years. Grill, lights, seat set up, the 400 starter, etc, but I'll get it changed over in due time. Someone even went to the trouble of putting electronic ignition on it.

Yea non original like the Schwartz wide front, 3pt hitch, toolbox, priority flow devider , M&W pump. All the stuff that drives the correct police crazy.

Why

Why join the ranks of the 'correct police'?You have a great tractor-clean,straight.... and at a bargain price.Who cares if it's not perfect, correct original. When you take away all the "add ons",you make it a lesser tractor. So unless you want to make a perfect 'show tractor' that will not be used, leave it as is.And ENJOY!!!!

(quoted from post at 20:05:53 03/15/14) I am curious what you mean by SMTA hood?

The SMTA hood is a wee bit longer than a stock M hood by a couple of inches or so, don't remember exactly. The change over to the SMTA style bolster required the hood to be longer.

When I first bought my M, it was directly oppisite to what Biggerred has.
Mine had the SMTA bolster and longer hood, but not an SMTA, just a stock M.

Biggerred, if you'll be looking for a SMTA bolster later on, I'll let you have mine real cheap, $50. It just sits there taking up space. As heavy as it is, it would have to be a local pickup though.

Best regards

Patrick explained the hood. If the hand crank shaft sticking out of the bolster is the same diameter all the way to front, it probably has a MD type bolster and the longer SMTA hood. If the start crank shaft diameter drops toward the forward end it probably has a M or SM gas bolster.
If so and the hood fits it came from a M or SM.
Looks like the casting number on the center housing ends in R1, that would make a 99% chance its from a SMTA. Can't tell for sure on the R1 or crank size in the picture.
560 fenders in good condition are worth more than MTA type. I prefer the 560 type on a user if any fenders. Wide front on the tractor will cut sharper than a IH. Maybe you prefer a narrow front.

This old bird will be used for sure. I agree with what you said. All the add ons make it much more useful. First time I've ever had front wheel weights on anything.

i see, i didnt know the t. a.'s use a longer hood.
the super w"6"s including the ta models all use the same hood of 39 7/8"
the standard w6 has the slightly longer hood.
the farmalls are different then.thanks.

I like that tractor. When the correct police come around and tell you about the bolster, the grille, the power steering, the hydraulic pump, the three point hitch, the really big hoses, and all the other custom features, look completely surprised and tell them: "You don't say...."... or "Well, how about that...." or maybe something more personal about their family history.

Definitely a very useful tractor with all the add ons. Especially the 3 point and power steering!

You got one heck of a deal. I'd have given 2k. in a heart beat. I Don't need one but it would be nice to have that tractor with the three point hitch. I like them original but useful. I'm all for adding things to the tractor that help make it useful on a farm. My SM has an added on 3pt hitch. I need to add some outlets to the back but I'll get there soon. Again congrats on the find!

Over the last several months, I've noticed a SMTA in the storage lot of some company on the west side of Wichita, KS. If you were to take I-235 around the west side, a short distance south of US 54/Kellogg on the east side of the by-pass there is one sitting there. Paint is faded, but you can make out the shape of the SMTA emblem. don't know who owns it, but probably who ever owns or leases that lot. Just parked against the back fence among a bunch of other stuff. May have been sitting there for years, but first noticed it about 6 months ago.

Where do you live, biggerred?

I'd buy you a set of M fenders and swap you even up for the 560 fenders if its feasible.

An SMTA for south of 2K is a steal.
