Should the three-point be up or down when checking HY-Tran fluid level? Operators manual is silent on this issue.

Down is fine, but it does not matter. A good recommendation is to put 5 extra gallons in it anyway. There is an Oring and connection on the intake to the MCV hydraulic pump that can leak air and the extra oil covers it. The extra oil is harmless. Jim
