New to me 400

Well the itch hit yet again... I brought this beauty home with me the other day. I bought it mostly for the tin, it's nearly perfect. And the pedals and steering supports are barely worn, leading me to believe the tach that shows 4000 hrs is probably right. The only bad part is that it's stuck. Pretty badly stuck. I'm thinking this tractor must have spent its life under a corn picker, considering its wide stance and great tin and the precleaner. Also wondering if that's what the brackets and alignment pegs are on the frame rails?

The brackets on the frame rails are for a cultivator. I like your ih tools sign!

Good luck with the engine, nice find.

Have fun!

It amazes me that someone was particular enough with this tractor to not have a single dent in the tin or to ruin any if the emblems but didn't care enough to simply put a can over the exhaust! Oh well. Thanks for pointing me towards the cultivators.

Another question. Could a 400 be at all ordered with the stamped fronts from the factory? I thought not. So I'm wondering what would be the reason someone would have went to the trouble of changing it? Seems odd to me.

Thanks! I managed to get ahold of that sign at an old IH dealer sale last year. There were a bunch of things I wanted on that sale, but some other guys wanted them more!

Nice find. Did you buy it to use as a donor tractor or are you going to fix it up? I really like those old 400's. I have fixed up two of them in my lifetime. Have fun!

That is the plan now! I was going to use the tin for another 400 I'm doing but this one seems too nice to scrap.

Probably used the complete lower bolster from a newer tractor, 60 series ETC. Should find a casting number and date code if readable on the lower bolster to get a idea of the original tractor.
Maybe they ruined a wheel or axle on the original. Or does it have any sign of a wide front being removed?
