I have a 44 farmall m converted to 12 volt alternator 12 volt coil. 60 amp ammeter gauge, would not start. checked to see if there was voltage at coil positive side , none. on negative side 12,changed the positive to neg and all voltage is good switch on 12 volts off 0 , 12 now to negative side , good spark. anyone know why

but it doesn't explain the reverse on the coil , I changed the positive wire on the coil to the negative side to get everything right seems like something is not correct, lead from switchshould go to positive side of coil it seems

did it run befor? im pretty sure the hot always hooks to the neg. of coil , pos. to the points ,but i will tell ya the right way for that conversion would be to use a 6-volt coil & a resister block to cut power in , with 12v to the points youll burn them up fast , better keep a spare set on hand

A standard coil will still work at either Polarity although its more efficient if used correctly. Must have been a connection or other wiring problem or a ground etc.

With switch on theres voltage with respect to ground on the input of the coil while its 0 on output if points are closed but battery voltage if open assuming coils primary winding is okay.

Negative grounded battery means the wire to the coil goes to negative and vice versa. As mentioned you probably got a better connection. Connecting the wire to the wrong coil terminal does not cause problems for a while.

Ah but if you had a simple and common bad connection at the coil you could in fact had no spark before you messed with it but after you got spark because you fixed a bad connection you did not know you had. Does not take much to make a bad connection that will stop spark
