H Water Pump packing

Just finished up on a Farmall H project and ready to get it out of the door, I do have a minor coolant leak that I didn't see before. I know it is the packing nut. My question is, "Aside from trying to just tighten the nut, is there packing material that precedes putting the nut in?" I took the water pump apart and I do not recall having any type of washer or material that I put in before I put the nut on. IN my parts catelog, there is a part called "packing" that inserts before the nut. I hope I am not too confusing with this question. I am more familiar with AC tractors. Thanks in advance and I posted a pic of the finished product.

Yes, there is a packing material that goes in behind the brass packing nut. I would say the old worn packing is still in there and that is why it is leaking a little. You can try tightening the packing nut a little and see if that stops the leak. If not, then you will have to remove the pump, remove the old packing and install new.

Thank you very much. I will try tightening first. The only trick now is trying to get a wrench on it. I should be able to, otherwise I'll pull the front end. Thanks again!

There are two nuts, water pump bearing nut and the water pump packing nut. There is packing behind the water pump packing nut. You can try tightening the packing nut to see if that will stop the leak. If not back the packing nut out( you might have to remove the water pump driver pin, water pump driver and driver studs) install some more packing and tighten packing nut. Do not over tighten the packing nut, tighten just enough to stop the leak. Can get packing at your IHC dealer or just use packing from a roll.

Way to go guys, looks perfect.
My old "H" owner"s manual shows a real tiny picture, but I think it shows three rings of packing, installed with the gaps staggered. Part number from 1939 is 45925-DA.

I hope you do realize you can remove the water pump without having to remove the front end or radiator.

your post brought back alot of memories. I restored an H in high school. Ironically had the same thing happen. the other post are right. try to tighten packing nut, but likely needs removed and packing added. I didnt bother with trying to find the right packing and I used a piece of leather shoe string. it's still in there and dont leak. I can still remember my first drive after I got it done like it was yesterday!!!
