Yesterday Dad was hauling manure with his SMTA and with all this lovly snow and ice got stuck a few times and after trying to get unstuck he said now that it will not shift into 4th and 5th gear with the tourque in either position, would this mean a bent shift rail? thanks for your thoughts and advice.

You didn't say if the shift lever moves normally to the right and moves forward and rearward normally. Take the shift lever out and manually with a bar line the shift fork notches to the neutral position. Then see if the fork on the left will move both directions with the bar and see if it goes in the 4th or 5th gear. If it works maybe the shifter end needs fixed. If it doesn't shift to the 4th or 5th but you can move the notch back and forth, look in the belt pulley gear box opening to see why its not moving the sliding gear.
Usually when the 4th 5th shift rail is out of the neutral position and the transmission is shifted to another gear you have lockup. So makes me wonder if its just a shift lever out of place, but that's the first place to start.

If the tip of the shift lever is worn down to a nub, get it re-welded / built back up to 3/4" fore-and-aft, and about 1/3" thick. Somebody on here ought to chime in with a pic.

Will it shift into R, 1, 2, or 3 and drive normally?

If yes, then something's broke or bent. You won't know what until you get in there and look.

If no, then you've got the classic "stuck in two gears" problem. Pull the shifter, align the forks, reinstall the shifter, and get on with your day.

If it will not go into the 4/5 position to the right on the lever, the rail for 4/5 might be out of place. Pull the lever and see. (two plugs on the shift tower below the little bell shield and spring on the casting) remove one plug by punching it out or drilling a hole and using a slide hammer. Then punch or push out the pivot pin and pull the stick. If the rail slots are aligned, the issue will need to be looked at by removing the belt pulley drive (or cover plate if no drive) and checking the 4/5 mechanism. Best of luck Jim
