re cast front steel wheels h?

I guess this is more to the guys that have the cast wheels for the h or m.

If one had a pattern or original wheel. Do you think its as simple as having new wheels casted? I'm figuring I would have to get something machined on the casting for the bearings. I have a foundry near me that I could have it casted at.

I really want to put steel on my 43 h. I hope to ,make it does front as well

primer, If you look around you will see some steel wheels for sale from time to time. Rears are not to hard to find. I know of 3 sets for sale I think 2 set on Ebay and another i think in NY. Also have seen front for sale but price is all over the place. Most cast front steels where cut off for rims and rubber tires. You may fine a set of cut offs that would give you the bearing hub and centers. You willhave to add on the 3" flat wheel ring. But it would be better than starting from scratch. oldiron29

Yea I've seen the rears on ebay. They don't seem as hard to find as the fronts. I want to aquire a pair of fronts before I worry about rears. I saw a set on ebay a while back that brought about 1200 or so. Which seems rediculous. I was just wondering if I had one wheel if it would be worthwhile to have the second one cast and machined if necessary and how much and what machine work would have to be done..

I think it would be expensive to have cast because a pattern used for casting has to be larger than the finished product. I think for cast iron it is 1.1%. We used to have a special ruler to make patterns with that had the allowance built into it. It might not be that critical on one of those wheels though.

As for machine work it will depend on how many different sizes need to be machined plus other factors. It could get expensive for one piece because of set up time.

Yea, I probably should give up on this idea and just concentrate on finding a good used set. Just exploring my options.

You could use an original wheel as a pattern to have a new one cast, the shrinkage is 1/8" per foot so the new one would be 3/16 to 1/4" smaller in diameter, not really a big deal. Or you could have 2 made and then have a matching pair.

It would depend on the foundry, but I would guess that it would be pretty expensive to have a new wheel cast. I checked into having a 26" diameter, 150 pound cast iron implement wheel duplicated and the foundry quoted me a price of $650. There is an Amish owned and operated foundry in Pennsylvania that I understand has very reasonable prices. They quoted me a price to cast some small parts and the quote was less than half of what another foundry wanted.

Theres a set forsale in the parts section on this site.
1000 bucks for fronts. A little high but cheaper and
easier then trying to make.

If you were worried about the size, you could just use the full size one for a pattern and make TWO for the tractor. Then both would be the same size, ~98.5% of the original.

Off the top of my head the only place I can think of that would be machined would be the hub.

Getting a "one off" done would be more than paying $1000 for the pair. Foundry work isn't cheap.

I would try to find a set. I have a full set front and rear. On a 42 that runs. rears originally off a 40. not really willing to sell since I am like you and also have a 43 on rubber. restored that tractor once & using it. plan is to maybe restore it again in time and apply the steel wheels to it since that seemed to be a low manufactured year because of the war and steel was common cause of rubber rationing. its kinda my WW-2 tractor. I do also have a set of front cut offs from the 40. Don't think messing with them would be much help to ya though. The guys on here talked like $1000 for a set of fronts was to high when I posted awhile back on this site inquiring what mine were worth. They were talking like $1000 for a complete set of front and rears.

The price jumped on the fronts really high for some reason. If I could find a set of fronts and rears for 1k I would be ecstatic.

I'm going to keep my eye out. I've had stuff casted at Cattail. They seem to be super reasonable. What I was worried about is what machining would have to be done.

I agree it would be preferable to find a good set. At this point I'm going to continue looking. I have another project I want to finish this year anyways.
