1256 vs 1066

Other than HP, what are the big differences between a 1256 and a 1066? I found a 1256 in decent shape and runs well for the asking price of $5000.00. I went to my neighbor who is a big IH guy and he said to stay away from the 1256 but didn't give me much for a reason. He does like the 1066 more than any other IH so I was wondering about the differences between the two.
 
I rather like the 56 series. I would choose the 1256 over the 1066 but the price seems low to me (at least for here). Is there something wrong with it? I don't believe those engines are cheap to rebuild, but anymore that's true of about any engine in that power range.

The boys that have owned one can give you the list of "watch out fors". It is an old machine now. I guess they both are.
 
As stated the engine is the big difference.the 1256 is the 407 dry sleeve very very good engine but probably 2 times more expensive to overhaul and they are almost impossible to find at wreckers.The 1066 is a 414 wet sleeve engine, good engine but prone to cavitation erosion but are reasonable to rebuild and wrecking yards are full of combines with engines just waiting to be transplanted into tractors.Don"t forget to give the ta a good test as well or you will add another $4000 to your tractor.
 
I don't think there is even that much difference in hp. And this is actually the first time I've heard someone say "stay away" from a 1256. Far as I know they were good tractors and IMO, they are cooler and more desirable to own. And good 1256s can be bought for $5,000 because that's what I paid for mine.
 
I had a 1256 used it for several years and I liked it better than a friend's 1066. Never had much trouble, I did end up putting a clutch in it but it was weak when I bought the tractor. I pulled a chisel plow, disk, disk mower, baler, field cultivator, bush hog, hmmm come to think of it I used it for about everything..... Wish I still had it now that I think about it! With duals and weights it seemed unstoppable.
 
A 1066 is just an 'improved/upgraded 1256.As was stated the engine is the biggest difference.Obviously,tinwork is another factor...HP is baisicly the same.Both are good tractors.I have a '12' Love it,damn good tractor even though it has 20,000 hrs.
 
The tin is faded/dented and the rear tires are @ 40%, but other than that it seems to be a pretty solid tractor. Thanks for all the replies.
 
They are both good tractors. I have a 1456 which is a newer version of the 1256 and a 1066 and I am impressed with the power of both. Also very dependable. Older 407 engine is expensive to overhaul but last a long time. Newer 414 is cheaper to repair and easier to work on.
 
A '10' is a fuzz heavier than a '12'.A 12 will still have the 'old style' front axle.A 10 wil have the newer heavier axle.The rear axles are a little bigger as well.I personally like the 56 tractors better,not as 'big' and bulky as the 66s are.In terms of work put out,I would say they are the same.In terms of reliability,they are the same.
 
Axle diameter is the same. The 66's are heavier-framed tractors, the engine frame rails, casting around the grill, bolsters, transmission housing, rear ends, are all visibly larger.

I like the look of the 56's better but the performance of the 66's.
 
If you can find a 1256 in reasonably good shape you better buy it. If you don't won't to buy it let me know, I may be interested in buying it.

They only made a limited number of 1256 and 1456's. It will be a collector tractor. There were many 1066 made so they won't be quite as collectible.
 
The 414/436/466 was also used in IH and Navistar trucks in a different configuration for years after IH was purchases by Case then NH (Fiat)

Parts are easy to get
