Pulling with a W4?

Bought a rusty old W4 last fall to pull the wood wagons around - and just realized that I now can qualify for the local antique tractor pull.

This one has good tires, weights on all 4 corners, and the rears are loaded. How will it fair in a pull? Around here I would imagine it would be against H"s and JD B"s mostly - maybe some of the older JD A"s.

Does the weight distribution of this style help, or hinder in a pulling competition?

Thanks!

Tim

a lot depends on how well the motor runs, if its tuned up etc etc... its basically an H with different (heavier) clothing.

A W4 will always outpull an H.We pull for percentage points. We dont count distance. In that way a small tractor will often 'outpull' a bigger tractor. We dont do 'classes'.

It is all about traction and that is where your hitch and tires come to bear. The W4 is powered by an H engine, so you won't be out gunned. Good Luck

I guess I am not clear how a W4 would outpull an H.
If you dont weight up, then I suspect the W4 weighs more.
But in antique pulls, we weight up for particular classes. So there wouldnt be a weight advantage. In fact, the H would have an advantage because of more movable weight.
The W4's first gear is barely slower than the H. I would suspect the two would run out of power just the same.
The H has taller tires. To me, thats an advantage.

Now, you will not want the loaded tires. You want as much movable weight as possible. And for the most part, I think the W4 will shine the most in 4500lbs class on a typical short chain clay track pull.
