farmall H Head - rusty

Hi folks, been awhile since I was on here. My
grandfathers 1946 H has been in the garage (in my
parking spot!!) for at least 3 years. It"s time to
get this thing back up and running. 2 years ago I
had the head redone...valves ground and seated, new
hardware, etc. But the head has been sitting on my
garage floor all that time and has some flash rust
on all the machined surfaces. Is there a product
you all recommend to remove the rust w/o having to
re-machine the head? Thanks!

Steel wool and maybe some WD-40 to loosen the rust a bit, then just wipe it down with a soft rag. Concentrate on the gasket surfaces. The rest of it probably won't matter.

use a wire wheel on the head surface, but... how much rust is there. better disassemble it and check the valve faces and seats. that"s the important stuff. even if you have to take it to a machine shop and get the valves lapped to remove the rust. this is where auto trans oil comes handy. if everything was coated and the head was installed in a plastic bag you are safe for storing it. any rust in the valve seats and your in trouble.

thanks guys, will look closely at the valves for rust and use a 3M pad on the sealing surfaces. I appreciate the help.
