Was pushing snow here tonight with the Farmall M and very rapidly lost forward momentum. The tractor now sits blocking my driveway. Problem is that I can push in the clutch, put it in gear and nothing when I disengage. The hydraulics also quit working. I am not that savvy with tractor transmissions. The clutch feels solid the shifter moves fluidly. There was no smell prior or slipping of the clutch prior. It happened rather rapidly. Within about twenty feet I went from ops normal to nothing. The tractor is able to be moved in neutral freely with a truck and chain. Is there a shear pin? Is this a clutch issue? Any suggestions much appreciated.

If you can shift it with the engine running without stepping on the
clutch that would indicate to me that the input shaft is not turning
and the problem is in the clutch. Did you hear any loud sounds
when it stopped? Sounds like the belly pump is not running which
indicates that the countershaft is not turning for sure.

The hydraulics are not driven by the belly pump. It is removed and the hydraulics are PTO driven. No loud noises either. It really just slowly stopped. Now I can shift through the gears without pressing in the clutch with no movement. I can press in the clutch and release with no movement. Any ideas to fix it???

I would look up through where the belly pump was and see if the
input shaft is turning when the engine is running. If not I would
look to see if the flywheel is turning, if it is the the problem is in the
clutch. If the input shaft is turning then your problem must be
between it and the upper constant mesh gear. I don't know
specifically but I think once you look up in there it will be apparent.
The PTO running the hydraulics doesn't really signify either way
since the PTO is also powered by the countershaft just like the belly
pump.

Thanks Zach, I will give it a whirl. I did check to see if the input shaft was turning when tractor was running last night and it is. PTO is turning as well but at a much slower rate......which does not make sense to me. Its 3 degrees here in Montana this morning, going let it warm up a bit and try to follow input shaft into transmission and investigate further.

Only thing I can say is to start it up and look up
inside the area the belly pump was. Could possibly
be you lost all 4 bolts for the coupler, or
possibly the key on the input shaft yoke sheared.

That is very interesting and I don't know what to think. I would pull the belt pulley drive or the plate cover in that spot if that is what you have. That will let you look into the front of the transmission and see what is going on in there. I wonder if you could have sheared the key that holds the countershaft to the lower constant mesh gear, but I have never heard of that happening, and I think it would make funny noises too.

Zach- A small miracle happened this morning! After looking at the input shaft closer I could not find anything wrong. I started it up went through the gears and found that 5th gear caught. Was able to rock it a lil bit and then magically my pto driven I hydraulics fired up. Was able then to have all gears for a short distance, just enough to get it off my driveway and into my pasture. But then it quit moving in all gears except 5th and my hydraulics died again as well. Any idea of what is going on now????

Should be able to see the problem if you remove the belt pulley gear box. Countershaft or bottom shaft in the transmission has lost a solid drive.
look at the front two gears in the transmission. If good see if the constant mesh gear on the lower shaft is turning without the shaft turning. 5th only runs through the top shaft. Others need the bottom shaft to turn.

After reading all the replies I think a light
turned on. I bet you have a broken brake pinion
shaft. That lets one side spin free and nothing
happens. Probably caught on a rough edge enough to
move itself temporarily.

If I understood his last post the tractor will still go in 5th and the PTO shaft quit driving the hydraulic pump. PTO would still have full power and the tractor wouldn't move in 5th if the bull pinion shaft was broke or the differential gears failing. If the differential gears are failing it may catch enough to go though. Hard to say without being there. One post said the PTO was turning slow compared to the input shaft. But without more info that could be normal since the PTO shaft turns at less than half the engine RPM.

Thanks for the input, everyone. The PTO does still spin but much slower then normal, I could less then 15 RPM I would guess......
