Redoing the hinge points and pins on my flip up seat. The LOWER hinge point on mine(hinge point CLOSEST to the seat pan.) has the pin shown in the photo. (3/8 diameter) and I redid the "wallered out " holes to take this new pin.

The UPPER hinge point on mine currently has a 1/2 Carriage bolt in it,only threaded at the very tip of the bolt. Did this ORIGINALLY take the SAME 3/8 pin as the lower hinge point that I just re did?????(SAME one in photo????

(BTW,I have been seeing different photos showing ALL KINDS of different hardware,Some replaced BOTH hinge points with 1/2 bolts. )

The litmus test on whether the carriage bolts are "correct" would be:

Is the square part of the carriage bolt engaged in a square hole? On a seat flip bracket, that answer is "no."

They used 1/2" because the holes were "wallered" out.
They used carriage bolts because that's what was on hand when a longer bolt was needed. Even now, there are always long carriage bolts on hand at the farm, but long hex-head bolts are hard to find.
