Bought a 856 custom diesel yesterday. Nothing fancy just mechanically sound tractor, original paint, good running condition and everything works. Were there a lot of these made? Thanks

i had a 756 custom only 737 of them made. there were not very many 856.the 756 were all 310d wide front one head light in fender no tilt steering wheel no hyd seat ta was stanard mine had no ta. had 2 speed pto . 2hyd valves 16.9 34 tires.

We had an 856 wheatland. I have seen one other one of those set up the way ours was. Solid front axle, no PTO or three point, swinging drawbar, two remotes, round fenders, and lights in the grill. It did have a TA and was a diesel. We shouldn't have gotten rid of it. I never paid attention, but I think all of that means it was an International not a Farmall.

The 856 Custom was a base model. No fenders, one remote, some were T/A delete.
John Deere responded with the 4000 to compete with it. Most 856's in the Mississippi Delta were Custom's.

856 is one of my favorite tractors.

I think it was the other way around. IH came out with the Customs to compete with the JD 4000.

I've never understood how skipping a couple of headlights made the tractor so much cheaper.

The reality is, it didn't, and that's why there were only 737 of the 756 Customs made. Several of them were sold near where I grew up, to a family of brothers who would go to the dealer and make "group buys" for their farms.

Low production numbers make some collectors look for them.I know a little more about the JDs and there were 8095 4000s made and they bring as much as the late 4020s.The JDs were 10% cheaper 8/900#s lighter.I have seen very few 856 Customs.

Going mostly from memory...I only know of one 856 Custom in my area..I bought the fenders from it when he put a cab on..Here are some of the differences from a regular 856..

Smaller fuel tank
1 SCV standard
Single light in fender
Air filter different-no small inner element
34" rear tires with clamp centers-no wedge lock
6 bolt front wheels with smaller tires
Mechanical seat
No tilt steering
No battery covers-smaller batteries???
TA optional????

Tried to upload pictures, but was having computer problems. I appreciate everybodies thoughts. Would like to know how many was built or how to find out?

I put a new set of tires on 1 about 10 years ago. I didn't realize there were such things as customs. I am a 856 fan and the first thing I noticed was there were several pieces of tin missing. I ask about them and he went on to tell me about 856 customs, how he bought this 1 new in Creston Iowa. He passed on and his oldest daughter (who is married to a JD man)now has his tractor. It was painted and now looks better than it did new. Gotta love tractor history. I'm sure their oldest son, another farmer, will get it when she passes on.
