Need advice....how hard / difficult is it to repair / replace a TA in a Farmall 460 Gas. I saw one on Craigslist that is close to me, but they said the TA is out on the low side. What would I have to do to repair it and how many hours to do the work? How much would the parts cost? What would an IHCase shop charge? I am a shadetree mechanic and kind of slow- but could I do this work myself? Is it easy or tedious and hard? Please help....

Remove biggest share of the tin work, get splitting stands and jacks and cherry picker, remove fuel tank, split into 3 pieces. Center section is where TA sits. Buy a IT manual.

I didn't replace my 300 TA but I replaced parts of it with the help of D Slater and others on this forum. I actually had to have it out twice. It was not the most fun I ever had but I would do it again if I had to because I do like the TA. I don't have splitting stands so I blocked the rear wheels, made a support for the engine out of a 6x8 and two spare H frame rails. I put a jack under the front of the transmission and used an old copier cart to put the TA section on, that way I could roll it away from the transmission to work on it. I would not have wanted to do it without a concrete floor, though.

I'm sure that you will get lots of comments about how to do a TA job. This is how I would do the job. I just lift the front of the fuel tank and hold it up while I remove the TA housing. I always figure about 15 hours to do a complete TA job. As far as cost of parts, it all depends on what needs replacing. I usually replace the ramp and carrier with a HD sprag unit for about $350. It takes a little time to move the small plant gears & parts from the old carrier to the new one. Hy Capacity also sells a complete TA assembly. It all depends on what is needed and what your skill level is, or who you know that could help you when you get stuck.

Speaking of getting stuck, I need to start cleaning my driveway. Southern Minnesota received a lot of heavy wet snow yesterday afternoon and evening. It looks like there are a few drifts that are over 4 ft high. I think the Cub Cadet will get a good workout. Stay warm

Its not hard.Just a fair amount of work.As was said split it.Get/make a good stand, use a hoist READ/study the book and get after it.Above all,be safe!Tractors are heavy and can crush when they fall from improper 'stands'/supports.

John Athey; may I suggest peeking through the archives or repost, asking how to adjust a 460 TA. If my shortening memory recalls, I have read posts where this might be all that is necessary; wouldn't that be great! Some other folks will probably chime in here as well. Another idea, is there a tractor club or group in your area? Possibly contact them and you might be fortunate in that a member could give advice or help with this project and they might, in turn, gain a new member! I have a sister to your tractor; row-crop, 1963 model. Good luck w/your project.

I did it on four sheets of 3/4" plywood over a lot of 2X6s (which I happen to have lots of). Be sure to use alignment dowels. The TA itself turned out to be in good shape but the TA clutch was shot.

save your money and just use it as is. not going to hurt a thing as you will never get into a situation where you need the torque. it is only used in field work on heavy pulling so you don't have to down shift. you can down shift into 2nd gear and just use it as is. ooh, you can also lift the cultivator or plow up a bit in the tough spots also.
in a case ih shop would be way more than the tractor is worth.

I was told by an older IH collector that there are three TA options out/going out or TA delete.I have a few and never had one go out.460 gas tractors don't sell well and it might cost more than it is worth.Usually cheaper to buy good ones.
