How tight should the nuts be tightened on the rod bolts? I see there are castle nuts to put a cotter pin thru the end. I thought one of my manuals would give a # rating but I can't find anything.

There is no torque spec for the rod bolts. Run them down firm and then a little more until the holes line up so you can put a cotter pin through.

or better yet use some stainless safety wire in place of cotter pins

they are for cotter pins. stainless wire is not that fat. cotter pins are easy and neat.
